I have an 01 Boxster that needs a new engine. The Porsche mechanics charge $55 an hour. How many hours does it take (on average) to remove the old engine and install a new one?|||Removing and replacing the engine should be 4-8 hours (although the quoted shop rate you have is about 1/2 the lowest I've ever seen for any kind of skilled Porsche mechanic, so not sure if this is a reflection of the economy in your area or the skill of the mechanic; the later could have a large impact on how long it will take).
If you are replacing due to IMS issues, then 10-15 hours overall for removal, installation of the fixes on either the original engine or on the new engine, and reinstall (a couple hours more if the car is a Tiptronic).|||Get a real mechanic and it should take less than 6 hours. I can pull engines from a front mount rear wheel drive cars in about 40 minutes and less than an hour to get a new one in, I can remove rebuild and install the engine from front mounted car in a day and I do backyard work. A proper mechanic SHOULD be quicker.|||I reckon that's a day's work. Say eight hours.
But it depends how long the teardown takes in the first place.
If they are up to date they should be able to give you a computer estimate of length of time and total cost.|||LOL the guy above said a day. Your car will be in the shop for weeks and it will cost thousands.|||its not a day by any means. plus you are going to have to break it in, but thats not the mechanics job.
